New news service

After looking around at www.readlatestnews.com, I think I've found a new source for my daily news. This site gives you international, national, and local news about world events, science, celebrities, politics, business, and everything else you'd expect from a news service. I like the way it's laid out and the fact that the navigation is very easy.

Now, I know not everyone on the 'net lives in the US and speaks English. That's where this site comes in as very special. You can read news about your own country and you can even read it in your native language. Their headlines and articles come from notable news sites such as BBC, CNN, Reuters, AP, and many more. I'll be keeping an eye on this one!

Drug Rehab

It's all over the news. Stars and sports "heroes" enter drug rehab facilities to fix what's gone wrong in their lives. You'd think with all the drug information and education available, those would be the people we could use as good examples of staying drug free.

Along with the famous, there are the not-so-famous who also seek drug help from facilities such as Stone Hawk. Movies may have their Oscars. Music may have its Grammys. But bloggers also have awards! From now until May 22 at 11:59 PM, you can vote on your favorite blogs in a wide variety of categories. This is great news!

Awards give people the encouragement to continue their good work in the areas where they do well. Blogging covers a lot of territory and to be nominated from among the hundreds of thousands of blogs online is surely an honor in and of itself. Winning such an award would be the just about the best thing that could happen to any blog. Well for the most part anyway.

See, the blog awards categories include such things as Best Animal Blogger, Best Blog Design, Hottest Mommy Blogger, Best Pop Culture Blog, and Best Blog of All Time, among many others. But it also includes Most Obnoxious Blogger and Worst Blog of All Time. I curious to see who wins those awards.

Just browsing through the categories I've found quite a few blogs I'm planning to bookmark for future reference. I've also found some dear, familiar "faces" there and was delighted to see them nominated. Of course, I'll be voting, too. I encourage you to vote as well and to nominate your favorite blog.

Syberia 2

If you love video games, and you love pocket PC games, then this will certainly be of interest to you. This is the sequel to the game Siberia 1 and if you're already familiar with that, then you'll know the story. If not, I'll tell you the story of Siberia 2 and you can judge for yourself. Honestly, it looks pretty interesting to me and my son Brandon looked at this, too, and liked it.

The story is that of Kate Walker, a New York lawyer, who along with Hans Voralberg are looking for the fabled Siberian Mammoth. It's high adventure, thrills, action, and mystery as they search a forgotten universe for this beast.

The graphics are beautiful, as you can see from the shots below, which would make playing the game totally immersing.

There are some OS requirements, but if you have a newer Pocket PC or phone with those capabilities, you should have no problem playing this game.

Intermission - Voice over guy

If you've watched any television at all, you've seen the clever Geico commercials where a famous actor plus an "ordinary citizen" get together for the actor to interpret the citizen's experience with Geico insurance. The announcer for those commercials is not only a voice over artist, but he's also a film and television actor. His name is D.C. Douglas. He has had roles in such TV shows as Beverly Hills: 90210, Charmed, and 24. His voice is even heard in the Buffy: The Vampire Slayer video game.

If you're interested in hearing more of his voice over work, you can listen at My Voice Over Guy. You can also be looking for him and listening for him in upcoming productions such as the movie Deadwater. This nice move is just part of the results he's gotten since doing the Geico ads.

Intermission - The Golden Donkey

The Golden Donkey is the newest of awards. It's given to an elite group of naysayers who blog very insulting and inflammatory remarks about PayPerPost. The thing is, they don't have a clue what they're talking about. They have uninformed and uneducated opinions. The only thing they do have going for them is a website or blog that has a large reader base to soak up all the gossip and rumors. The likes of David Berkowitz and Mike Arrington have blogged in this manner, though it's obvious they haven't done their homework.

You can read all about The Golden Donkey award that is being awarded to Mr. Berkowitz at PayPerPost's blog. It's an enlightening article and you'll learn the real facts surrounding sponsored or paid posts on blogs. You'll also learn some other things, such as how this form of advertising is many times more effective than running other sorts of ads on the Web.

As far as advertising goes, you find it everywhere. Even in a movie such as those I post about here, you'll find brand name items such as Reese's Pieces or Coca Cola included in the movie. Those aren't there by accident. They are sponsored. Not only do advertisers use movies for getting their name out to the consumers, they use television, and I don't just mean commercials that are the obvious interrupters of our viewing. Products can actually be placed after the show is filmed. A box of Ritz crackers on a kitchen table can just as easily be replaced by a box of Golden Grahams or some other brand name item. While the characters don't actively use or promote the item that's been digitally inserted, the audience does still see it.

Because we do live in a digital age, it's only natural that advertisers want to expand their base and have begun to use blog marketing as a way to get their name and their product in front of people. Adding a link to a blog post, or to hundreds of blog posts, is a great way to spread the word and generate traffic, and it's cost effective as far as the advertising budget is concerned. It's even more effective if the posts surrounding the sponsored post also relate to the advertised topic. The flow is more natural and the results are better.

The Golden Donkey, therefore, goes for those who aren't forward thinking enough to realize this is an honest and viable way for advertisers and writers to come together.

Who would you give such an award to and why? I've been thinking about that question myself. I'd give it to the district manager where I work for harassing us at our store and withholding repairs of much needed equipment when, in fact, we are the number one store in the district for sales and other areas of business. I'd give it to him for treating our store like the red-headed step-child of our group.

Intermission - Live Earth Concerts

Coming July 7, 2007 there will be 7 huge concerts around the world. The goal of these concerts is to bring more attention to effects of global warming and to help fund the Alliance for Climate Protection, headed by Al Gore. Part of the money raised through the selling of Live Earth Concerts tickets goes toward staging this massive effort, of course.

Aside from ticket sales, the group is also seeking corporate sponsorships to help fund this campaign. If you're interested in the state of the environment (and who really isn't?), check this out for yourself.

Intermission - Look Like an Oscar Starlet!

As long as we're talking about movies here, we might as well also talk about the Oscars and what's hot and what's not. After the Oscars, you'll find a lot of wannabes scrambling to get their look-alike fashions into department stores and malls all over the nation. Some of those fashions will just beg to be passed over, as they aren't anything that the everyday woman would wear.

Naturally, Peter Belisi is also in the process of making you look like someone very special, which you are! His tactic, though, is to point you to good quality and real wearability in fashions. Still, the purses he points out are truly lovely and I'd love to own even one of them. A younger woman would also do well to look into the shoe styles and make mental notes about what to shop for in that area next time she goes shopping.

Intermission - PayPerPost rumors?

There are some changes coming to PayPerPost but they haven't let the secret out just yet. Now we are all guessing as to what this could be.

I'm supposing that in order to increase their online advertising presence, they are courting some big name advertisers. Of course, this could also mean, since the recent segmentation, that some of us "little guys" may be pushed aside. However, they might just improve some issues and make it possible for even us to post these ads and make a little money.

So, here's my rumor: Advertisers will be asked to post not only segmented opportunities, but also lower paying opportunities that anyone can take.

Am I getting close? Beats me. None of us will know until the news is actually released to us all. Until then, we'll be short on fingernails while waiting. This might play out better than a mystery movie or television police drama! I just hope it has a happy ending.

As for me, I'll just continue taking what paid posts I can and hoping they are all approved. Of course, I'll also continue blogging to you, the reader, about movies and other forms of entertainment including politics. After all, if it's on TV, it's got to be entertainment. Who actually believes everything the media says?

Intermission - The Ultimate Gift

This is a movie and a book, but it's much more than that. This is a movie with a purpose - a goal. The purpose is to inspire you, the viewer to get involved with giving to charities. But even more than that, it opens our minds to a view of the world around us and the needs that are there. It helps us to see that we each have gifts we can share with others.



Money given to charities is great. Even greater is our time, though, as many movements have but few volunteers to implement their much needed programs. This movie teaches you that anyone can become involved in charitable activities. In fact, you can begin your own grass-roots movement where ever you see a need. It's not enough in life to just live in our own little world. Until we can reach out to others in a real and sustainable way, we really haven't lived at all. Personal fulfillment comes from such outreach.

Intermission - Vacation Rentals

It's been one of my dreams to take a vacation on the Gulf Coast. I'd love to spend a few days down there, soaking up the sun and seeing the sights. I'd especially love to go out on the water in some sort of tour boat. I'm not that interested in deep sea fishing, but getting out there to maybe see the expanse of blue water would be great. Getting there isn't a problem since it's a pretty easy drive from here. But where to stay? A hotel? A motel? Those seem to cramped and limiting for vacation purposes.

Here's where vacation rentals by owner might come in handy. I could rent a condo or apartment and stay in a relaxed, homey atmosphere while exploring the coast. Even a vacation to the Florida Keys could prove restful and adventurous at the same time, and I could possibly get accommodations through VLBO.com.

Intermission - PayPerPost's new approach

PayPerPost, the online blog advertising company, has recently made some huge changes in their approach for both the advertisers and the bloggers who write the ads. They've called it segmentation, and though they are still working out some bugs, it's beginning to work pretty well. They are able now to offer bigger paying opps (that's "opportunities", to those of you who haven't begun this endeavor) to bloggers who have reached higher Page Ranks and lower Alexa ratings. This makes it more lucrative if you're looking for a way to make money blogging because those with better scores are able to take higher paying opps. Those with lower scores still have quite a few to choose from, but they don't pay as well. Hence, a very good reason to do what's needful to increase the rankings on your blog.

Also, advertisers can now more carefully sift out blogs with lower ranks or those whose blogs live on certain domains. Advertisers only pay a 35% service fee, while other places like ReviewMe charge a 100% mark-up for placing ads. It follows that because of these new rules and options, some advertisers can now offer opps of $1000 and know they are getting their money's worth as far as where the ad will live on the internet.

What's really great is that PayPerPost requires disclosure from all bloggers. That means you, the poster, are keeping it all above board because you reveal to your readers that you do write some paid posts.

If you're not already advertising on PayPerPost, take a look and see how much more control you now have. If you're a blogger, look them over as well. You may just find an ethical way to earn some additional income.
