Music playing tips

My oldest grandson is pretty adept at playing the fiddle, mandolin, and even ukulele. He's been taking lessons for a couple of years now, is in his school band, and is a member of the local fiddlers association. I love hearing him play Bluegrass Music. He's got a lot of style when he plays - not just good technique. I should really send his mother (my daughter) the information about this newsletter I looked at.

It offers monthly tips to become a better player. There is also basic information for sale about playing all kinds of musical instruments with a Bluegrass flare. What do you think? Would this newsletter be helpful or not?

Intermission - Treasure hunters

Many movies' story lines are based on treasure hunters. National Treasure, Sahara, Romancing the Stone, and Indiana Jones, just to mention a few. And the treasure always seems to be a super valuable one that maybe only a few people have even heard of. The heroes put themselves through all kinds of tricky maneuvers to get their hands on the treasures.

I'm glad that I don't have to risk life and limb to acquire gold, though. Truthfully, a phone call or internet click makes it easy to purchase gold from a reputable precious metals dealer.

And I don't need a "dead man's chest" to accommodate it, either. All I need is an address of either myself or a safe deposit box, and my own gold treasure can be shipped to me from professionals whose only focus is precious metals and good deals on them.

Intermission - Who's getting married?

You know, big time movie stars can afford any kind of decorations and flowers they want when they get married. When they allow their weddings to be a public event, they want the most elegant weddings they can get. After all, press matters. However, I wonder if they ever try to save a little on wedding flowers so that their wedding budgets can stretch even further. After all, it makes good sense to do so.

They could be getting up to a 75% discount on their flowers, and still know that they are freshly cut from growers worldwide. In fact, they are only two or three days old when they are shipped. I am sure stars desire to skip the middleman whenever possible and get the best money can buy for an even lower price. Or maybe it's just my own sense of saving money on purchases that makes me think that way.

Intermission - Movin' on up

Many prominent celebrities are Hispanic. Stars and singers from Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries have made it big here in the United States, and they've earned their place in stardom. I wonder what kind of hotel accommodations they seek when they're on the road?

New news service

After looking around at www.readlatestnews.com, I think I've found a new source for my daily news. This site gives you international, national, and local news about world events, science, celebrities, politics, business, and everything else you'd expect from a news service. I like the way it's laid out and the fact that the navigation is very easy.

Now, I know not everyone on the 'net lives in the US and speaks English. That's where this site comes in as very special. You can read news about your own country and you can even read it in your native language. Their headlines and articles come from notable news sites such as BBC, CNN, Reuters, AP, and many more. I'll be keeping an eye on this one!

SWEENEY TODD

I am a huge Johnny Depp fan. I think I've seen most, if not all, his movies and liked every single one of them. He is able to play just about any character and really give it life. I think out of them all so far, though, Edward Scissorhands and Pirates of the Caribbean are my favorites. I don't know. It's hard to choose!

With Edward Scissorhands, you have a misunderstood but monstrous creation who merely wants to be loved by the girl he loves (Winona Ryder), and yet he knows it can never be due to his creator making his hands into deadly sharp scissors. My favorite moment in the film was when Edward was carving an ice sculpture, creating snowfall, and Kim is dancing around in that snowfall. From then on, every snowfall is credited to Edward carving ice sculptures from the old mansion, even though it is presumed he is dead. This is as touching a love story as ever has been filmed, even given the rather frightening aspect of Scissorhands.

Pirates of the Caribbean is a totally different venture for Depp as he plays Captain Jack Sparrow, a pirate who has seen his fair share of bad luck and really isn't very good at pirating. Seeking to regain the Black Pearl, his ship, after being marooned, Barbossa allows him to try to negotiate a return of the Pearl for the highly sought after medallion. "See, Jack, that was the attitude that lost you the Pearl in the first place. People are easier to search when they're dead." This indicates Jack's attitude about both!




Yeah, if you have to know more about Sweeney Todd, just visit the official Sweeney Todd movie site. I just did and saw some great spots!

Of course, you should also visit Sweeney Todd on MySpace to get the real low-down on it. I mean, who doesn't love Johnny Depp in slasher musical, and wearing all that sinister makeup? Couple that with this being a Tim Burton film, and I think it's going to be a hit!

Intermission - Red Box v. NetFlix

After getting the Red Box DVD rental machine place outside the McDonald's where I work, I've come to a conclusion. I really like it better than NetFlix, and we've been getting NetFlix movies for a few years now. At only $1 a night and being able to return them any time of the day or night, the Red Box really is a bargain. A NetFlix account won't send us anymore movies until we've shipped other ones back to them. That means that even with an account that says "unlimited movie rentals", we pay more money than if we rented a Red Box movie every day of the month!

While we can't get things like assisted living software from Red Box, we can't get it from NetFlix either. Nor any other software, for that matter. So, I think I'll drop our NetFlix account altogether and save myself some money by just renting the videos I really want, when I want to, from Red Box.

THE MIST

Who doesn't love a Stephen King movie? The "king" of fear and thrills, Mr. King has done it again with a new movie. The Mist by Stephen King will be in theaters November 21, 2007. After watching the trailers and reading the descriptions, I'm convinced this is one of his scariest stories ever.

I've been a Stephen King fan for a very long time. Movies like Carrie, Christine, Dreamcatcher, Firestarter, and Misery top my list of favorites. But honestly, I find it hard to really pin down my very favorite Stephen King story! Probably, if up against it, though, I'd have to say Misery is my favorite. With Kathy Bates at first endearing and then so blatantly evil, you have to love that contrast.

So, I'm very much looking forward to viewing this movie in the theater as soon as it comes out! Yeah, just before Thanksgiving, I'll head to town to see this one on the big screen.

I figure I'll probably buy the DVD as soon as it's released, too.

The Mist draws us in as a group of people are trapped in a grocery store by the evil mist that surrounds it. But what is worse: The monsters in the mist or the monsters that begin to surface from deep within the people who are trapped?

Intermission - LCD television

Not only do I like to play my movies loud, so I can hear all the nuances of speech and the ambient noises, I like to see them big. While my current television is pretty big, It would be great to watch all these movies on a samsung 40 inch LCD. Probably, after Christmas is out of the way, I'll be shopping for a new TV.

My time is fairly limited, though, since I work a full time job. I really don't have the time or the energy to go from store to store, take notes, ask questions, and compare prices, quality, and warranties. So, I'll be looking at Krillion.com for all that information. They'll also tell me where I can find my TV choice locally so I don't have to bother with shipping.

Not only does shipping make me wait, but it adds to the cost of the Item I'm purchasing. I don't like either of those conditions, so I plan to buy from one of the local stores.

Intermission - Bikers need love too

Britney Spears needs more than a dating service to help her these days. But if you're a biker, you can find your perfect mate online by checking out the biker singles at BikerPlanet.com. Bikers are unique and daring. It takes a special unique and daring person to share the love of the wind in your face and the open road before you.

Anyone who's a biker might want to look around at the folks who have already signed up for this biker dating. I looked around and saw all ages there as well as some very nice profiles. These bikers are from everywhere, so you're sure to find someone in your area to hook up with. The site is easy to navigate as well.

Of course, they give you a caveat to always be careful when contacting anyone online there. Stay safe and make sure you know who you're talking to. This is just common sense, though, isn't it?

Intermission - Sports credit card

I can remember a time when the names of our U.S. astronauts were household words. When anyone would immediately recognize those names and refer to them with awe because of the extreme courage they had. Today's astronauts still have that same courage, but sadly sports "heroes" are more familiar to us. Even NASCAR drivers' names are more of a household word today.

I do like NASCAR, though, so I won't say anything against it. Especially since Mark Martin is my state's "favorite son" in the circuit. In the Denzel Washington movie, Out of Time, Washington plays the chief of police of a small Florida town. I am not sure just where the town is or if it was fictional, but it makes me wonder if the cast stayed in some of the hotels in orlando while they were filming the movie.

These hotels are near many kinds of entertainment sites and resorts, so in between days of filming it would be very easy for actors and crew to find activities that would help them relax and have some fun. Considering the attractions in the Orlando area, including the nightlife and theme parks, there would be plenty to do that would provide a fun distraction from the hard work of filming.

Intermission - Quibblo quizzes

This looks like a really fun site to play around at in between movie watching. Quibblo lets you take popular quizzes and polls, or create your own for others to take. Topics include Movies/TV/Music, Sports, Arts/Humanities, News/Politics, Fashion, and a whole lot more.

Among the Top Rated quizzes and polls at Quibblo, you will find "Which candidate has the best chance of defeating Hillary Clinton as President of the United States?" Of course, there are plenty of entertainment and celebrity polls and quizzes you can enjoy, too.

If you want, you can add polls and quizzes to your site so your readers can get in on the fun. I think I'll look around and find one for Talkie Zoo!

Intermission - Luxury living outdoors

I have no doubt in my mind that stars and celebrities can have just about anything they want or need. I also have no doubt that many of them entertain outdoors when the weather permits. This kind of luxury living outdoors can even be enjoyed by the rest of us if we have durable and beautiful teak patio furniture.

It's a fact that teak furniture is both weather and termite resistant. With no embedded chemicals, this furniture is "green" and doesn't contribute to either ill health for the user or pollution to the environment. Teak wood is harvested from sustainable forests, which also makes it a good choice for outdoor living.

As I continue my own personal quest for a better life and lifestyle, teak patio furniture becomes ever more attractive to me as furniture I can safely use outside and can be proud of when I have people visiting me. Even if my grandchildren come to visit, I don't have to worry that they'll absorb some dangerous preservative chemical because they sat on my lawn furniture.

Intermission - Dog Tags

This is a really great idea. Get your kids or friends personalized dog tags they can wear or use on a keychain. These are intended for use as trophies, but you can order them any way you want them and have any engraving done on them that you like. I just got one in the mail after only a couple of days waiting time. How do you like it?

Since Brandon loves music, both listening to it and playing it, this dog tag is perfect for him. It's even his favorite color! Naturally, he seems full of himself from time to time so besides his name, I had the quote "Imitated By Many, Equaled By Few" also engraved on the tag.

I think he'll really get a kick out of this!

I almost messed up, though, when we checked the mail. He started to open the envelope this came in. When I saw what it was, I quickly snatched it out of his hand. He told me all he saw was the green color and nothing else. I hope so. I want this to be a surprise for him as part of his Christmas gifts!

These dog tags are very reasonably priced, and so is the shipping. Especially if you order more than one to give to the kids in your life.

Intermission - Bed and breakfast inns

A lot of scary movies are made in the surroundings of a bed and breakfast inn, a motel, a hotel, or some other similar accommodations. I'm so glad that all occurs just in the movies and not in real life. Brandon and I have talked recently about moving out west somewhere. Someplace like northern California, Oregon, or Washington. I'd really prefer to visit out there, first, and find out more about the surroundings, the local economy, and other issues that would be determining factors in a big move like that.

A visit out there could include a California bed and breakfast, so I could survey the location from a place where it's comfortable and homey. Checking out the area would be so much nicer if I could return to a home-like atmosphere at the end of the day, don't you think?

Intermission - DVD watching

If you haven't tried watching movies on your new computer or laptop, you really should. I've found that my Toshiba laptop has excellent screen resolution and since I can hook my surround sound up to it, I get a very good movie theater feel, even if the screen is a lot smaller. You could use a larger viewsonic monitor with your computer and view movies in high quality resolution. Of course, you can do other stuff with your computer, too. It's just that I LOVE movies and watch them daily, hence the creation of this blog.

The TV I use has a 25 inch (diagonal measure) screen on it. The viewsonic monitors are up to 22 inch which means they would be a great choice for viewing movies. The price is right, too.

Intermission - Camera shots

I watch War of the Worlds over and over again, trying to figure out a few things. How did they make that camera spin in and out of the van as Ray Ferrier drives furiously through stalled cars to escape the alien menace? And just what kind of van has rear seat windows that roll down at least halfway?

I have to wonder if they had rigged some sort of van rack so that the camera could be mounted on a pivot on top of the van for those close-up shots within the van. It almost seems like our eyes are the only things viewing the occupants as we pan from Cruise's driver's side window, around the windshield, and into the passenger area of the van - over and over. As if we are floating around and in and out of the van.

Regardless, it's fascinating to watch the goings-on inside the van as we occasionally glimpse the insanity and rampant fear of the people who are left afoot.
