STAR TREK : THE FUTURE BEGINS
I fully admit it - I'm a die-hard Trekkie. I saw all the old TV episodes and relished them in reruns, even those made in black and white. I have Wrath of Kahn and plug it in to play every so often. Who doesn't love Captain Kirk? After all, he's a real hero. Besides, watch those old Star Trek episodes and see if you can pick out rising stars (pun intended) who made it big after that. Also look for your cell phone (communicator), talking and responsive computer, touch screens, and more technology that has made it into our hands every day.
This film takes us back to before the time when Kirk was a mature star ship captain. It's set in Kirk's youthful days, when he was just beginning to learn who he was and what his destiny is, and how Spock would fit into it.
Chris Pine plays Kirk and Zachary Quinto (Sylar on Heroes) plays Spock. A better pair they couldn't have found for these key roles. Star Trek: The Future Begins (2009; PG-13) has everything you'd expect from a Star Trek episode - danger, villainous aliens, and nick-of-time salvation. With Bones (Karl Urban) poking needles filled with concoctions from other planets and maybe even www.quicktrimcelluslim.com, Kirk and Bones start off on the wrong foot, but soon become fast friends.
Yeah, watch it. You'll love it.
