CLOVERFIELD
This 2008 movie is a cross between Godzilla and The Blair Witch Project in many senses. The film is made to give the effect of being shot almost entirely from a hand held video camera. It starts out by developing the relationship between the central characters - two brothers, the camera operator friend, and a couple of young women.
While at a surprise going-away party for one of the brothers, there's a sudden earthquake in Manhattan. However, it's not an ordinary earthquake. It's been caused by a giant creature which is bent on destruction and death. The creature produces some vile offspring which attack the citizens while buildings and all manner of transportation are destroyed by the creature itself.
We watch the shaky footage at the group of main characters run from the destruction, try to rescue one of their friends, and avoid all the ammo being fired by the military.
It's an interesting way to film a movie and the characters do have real depth. It is rated PG-13 for violence, terror, and disturbing images so it's not one to let the younger children view.
