U-571
A few days ago I bought a couple of movies, one of which I don't even remember hearing of before. It was U-571. Because I'm still in between homes, I watched it Saturday on my laptop. I was looking forward to an action-packed submarine movie, and I wasn't disappointed.
This movie, made in 2000 and starring Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Jon Bon Jovi, and Harvey Keitel, was non-stop action. Based very loosely on events that occurred in World War II, the undersea war adventure begins with a crew of a US submarine being assigned a mission to recover a code writing tool the Germans had on board one of their crippled submarines. Through diversion tactics and quick thinking, the crew risks their lives to recover this item so the US can use it to decode messages sent by the Nazis.
Keep in mind when you watch this that it is NOT a history movie. A lot has been written in and much literary license comes to play in this drama. However, that aside, it's an excellent choice if you enjoy war movies, especially submarine ones. as much as I do.
