TIN MAN

This is a fairy tale based very loosely on L. Frank Baum's Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This story has similar characters but a darker, more sinister them as D.G. (Zooey Dischanel) discovers she was raised by people who weren't actually her parents. She makes her explorations into O.Z. (Other Zone), meeting characters such as Glitch (no brain; Alan Cumming), Raw (coward; Raoul Trujillo), and Wyatt Cain (Tin Man; Neal McDonough). The personalities of these characters is very similar to the scarecrow, the cowardly lion, and the tin man of the original, but their stories are completely different.

D.G. learns she has an evil sister (Kathleen Robertson) who has put their mother in isolation, and who has tried to kill her when she was still very young. D.G. is trying to find and contact her mother, the queen, while sis is trying to find the emerald that holds the power to make her the ruler.

Facing Long Coats (the evil sister's army), Monkey Bats, and carnivorous creatures, this troupe travels across the land, through forests, to find the brick road that will lead them to Central City and the answers they need. They wind up in the tower of the evil sister. (Who knows how they got up there. Maybe a stair lift?) Then they wind up in the dungeon. What fairy tale doesn't have one of those?

Not exactly for younger children do to the fright factor, Tin Man (2007) is a well made and mystical mini-series produced for television. I don't know what the real rating is, but I'd say PG-13.
