THE SOLOIST
Jamie Foxx plays Nathaniel Ayers and Robert Downey, JR plays newspaper columnist Steve Lopez in this compelling true story of a homeless man. The Soloist (PG-13; 2009) tells the story of Mr. Ayers, a Julliard trained musician who winds up on the streets with a shopping cart filled with his earthly possessions - everything from furnace filters to colorful costumes. How? He is paranoid schizophrenic, but not medicated. He lives under bridges and sometimes at a homeless shelter. During his waking hours, he spends his time playing a violin, which he does very well.
Mr. Ayers is discovered by Mr. Lopez. Looking for a new story for his column, he winds up not only learning a great deal about the musician, but he actually lets go his heart and becomes a true friend to the man. A big change after a lifetime of self-serving and little commitment to others.
Watch the story unfold as, through flashbacks, we learn how Mr. Ayers came to this state of being. It's a good story and worth watching. You will also learn the plight of the homeless not only in Los Angeles but around the country.
Ask yourself: How close are many of us to being in the same sad situation?
