DEEP IMPACT
I saw this movie a number of years ago, and watched it again last night. All in all, it's still a pretty good movie although it runs pretty much as you'd expect it to. With actors such as Tea Leoni, Morgan Freeman, Robert Duval, Elijah Wood, Sean Bean, and other familiar stars, though, an otherwise predictable story is taken to new heights.
It's the story of people trying to deal with an ELE (Extinction Level Event) that could occur to the earth as a comet races toward our planet. There are the personal relationships as well as the possible cataclysmic event to follow through the movie.
Released in 1998, this PG-13 film is, to me, an excellent sci-fi movie as well as a very good human story.
By the way, just after I watched it, I read a CNN story about a comet that happens to be exploding now and is visible to the naked eye.
Says CNN:
The comet lacks the tail usually associated with such celestial bodies but can be seen in the northern sky, in the constellation Perseus, as a fuzzy spot of light about as bright as the stars in the Big Dipper.
