FEARLESS
I'm not generally a fan of martial arts movies, but this Jet Li film is outstanding. He plays the part of a real person in Chinese history, and does it very well. It's somewhat a political film, but with a lot of action and a lot of heart.
The setting is turn-of-the-century China, when it was being dominated by other world powers. Huo Yuan Jia (played by Jet Li) is a wushu fighter seeking to become a champion in the province, the country, and indeed the whole world. He winds up killing an opponent in a fight that was outside the ring. A godson of the man exacted retribution by killing his mother and his little girl. This set Huo Yuan Jia on a road to self-discovery, repentance, and victory over his own inner man.
Fearless was released in 2006 and is rated PG-13 for violence. In an interview, Jet Li said this is his last martial arts movie. It was his desire in this movie to show people that martial arts is for the mind, body, and soul...not for revenge and retribution.
