V FOR VENDETTA

V For Vendetta is an Andy and Larry Wachowski film, and they did a super job on this. Extremely violent and having some very bad language (hence, the R rating), this film is a societal commentary of the highest order. I love anything remotely political, and this movie combines sheer fear with politics (which should be the usual combination anyway) to produce a hero who uses terroristic tactics to fight against the totalitarian society he lives in.

"Remember, remember, the 5th of November" is the line you should remember from this film. It refers to an anarchist attack on the House of Parliament by a person named Guy Fawkes. The event was in 1605 when he attempted to blow up the building. Now, Guy Fawkes Night is celebrated with bonfires and fireworks. It is unclear to me if they are celebrating the thwarting of the plot and the execution of Guy Fawkes, or celebrating the fact that someone decided to try to overthrow the government which at the time was ruthless in its dealings with people.

The "hero" in the movie wears a Guy Fawkes mask as he goes about seeking to destroy the government currently in power. It's sci-fi mixed with political history and some scare factor thrown in. Yeah, I liked it.
