Braveheart
This is a 1995 film starring Mel Gibson (you'll find we have quite a few Mel movies in our collection). He not only starred in the film, he also directed and produced it.
Gibson plays William Wallace, a Scot who got fed up with English tyranny in his country and began a war with England to set Scotland free. This is a historical film and could be very educational, but I wouldn't recommend youngsters seeing it. There is violence in the form of medieval warfare, some brief nudity in the context of marriage at one point and the "mooning" of the English army at another, and there is a couple of instances of "the" word being used. It is rated "R".
Wallace is well-depicted in this film as a hero. Part of the Scottish peasantry but with a high degree of intelligence and some education, provided by his uncle after his father was killed. It's also a love story between Wallace and his secret bride, who is killed by the English as well. He is also depicted as a man of intense faith in God. There are scenes that actually brought me to tears - scenes of the love between Wallace and his wife, losing his wife, and losing his own life in the quest for freedom.
